Big Ben Loses Out To Elizabeth
THE NAME Big Ben is seared into the minds nearly every British person, and many through out the world. But how many realise it’s not the building but the name of the bell within. Big Ben became the general name through the years.
The west tower, originally known as the King’s Tower when rebuilt in 1860, the tower was renamed Queen Victoria Tower to commemorate the long reign of Queen Victoria.
The House of Commons authorities agreed on the name change last month. The motion stating: “in recognition of Her Majesty’s 60 years of unbroken public service on behalf of her country”.
The new name will be the Elizabeth Tower.
