The Florida Page – May 2013

FOR UK VISITORS DRIVING IN FLORIDA. (Tell the ones in your life!) “After offending tourists and causing havoc in local tourism offices, and likely running afoul of the Geneva Convention, the State of Florida lawmakers completed a speedy about-face yesterday officially repealing a hastily-created and little-noticed 2011 law requiring foreign tourists to get a special [...]

Sandra’s Taste of Britain – May 2013

To cook or not to cook? – that’s the question … Why on earth not? – that’s the answer!” – (Original/ Sandra!)   I HAVE had a few requests for Scotch eggs, and on my checking, realized that I last featured it my second column … so a good 20 years ago! This is a very [...]

THERE HAVE been two enormous stories running this month on Coronation Street and we’ll kick off with the main one which has been the Rovers Return going up in flames. Yes, the nation’s favourite pub burns to the ground after Karl Munro pours petrol in the cellar and sets it ablaze. Angry Karl is jealous [...]

Eastender’s Monthly Update — May 2013

THEY SAY that the definition of insanity is continually repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result. If that is so then Sharon Watts Mitchell Rickman To be continued is certifiable. Then again, with Den and Angie as parents, what else could she be?… Sharon is supposed to be getting married to Jack but [...]

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

UK-US TAX INFORMATION

Tax Treaties – What They Don’t Say! IT WOULD be nice if the US-UK tax treaty said something like – if income has been taxed in another country or is paid by a foreign government, for example, a UK social security pension, you do not have to include it on your US tax return, and [...]

H-1B Cap Reached – What Are The Options Now?

THE CAP for the H-1B non-immigrant working visa for the fiscal year (October 1, 2013 to September 30, 2014) has now been reached. The H-1B is one of the most common working visas. As such, with the cap being reached, this leaves many foreign workers in limbo as they are unable to obtain the necessary [...]

Union Jack’s Sporting Roundup June 2012

England Welcomes The West Indies THE WEST INDIES arrived in England rather disheveled with injuries, visa problems and a missing Marion Samuels who was due to arrive after playing in the Indian Super League. Great British Cars – Rolls Royce Wraith

SATELLITES, let’s face it it’s hard to get along without them these days even when driving. A voice from somewhere is beamed up 250 miles or so to an earth orbiting satellite, from there the voice is redirected straight to your pocket or purse and then in turn wirelessly jumps into your cars stereo and [...]

The Florida Page – April 2013

■ WE ALL get scam emails but because of my work I get unique British-theme ones. Do these deluded people (out of India it appears) really think I would believe this letter (copied verbatim below), replete with poor syntax, missing definite articles throughout, came from Downing Street? —–Original Message—–From: British High Commission <admin@autopark.net.ua> Sent: Wed, [...]

Introduction

The Union Jack has been published monthly since April 1982. Our readership now exceeds 220,000 throughout the USA. We serve a devoted readership comprised primarily of British expatriates, ranging from recent immigrants to war brides who relocated to the States a half-century ago, as well as a growing number of American Anglophiles. All of our readers, whether aged 25 or 75, share a common desire to maintain strong ties to Britain and the British community in America.

Union Jack’s regular advertisers include specialty shops and wholesalers, pubs, restaurants, immigration attorneys, insurance providers, financial services, shipping companies, travel agents and a variety of mail order gift suppliers, all of whom seek the unique and lucrative link Union Jack provides to one of the USA’s largest yet most assimilated ethnic markets. Our advertisers range from small ‘mom and pop’ business to larger businesses.
