Coronation Street Monthly Update July 2012

WHAT A month it’s been on Coronation Street! With the wedding of Dennis and Rita, Corrie has Mrs Tanner back on the Street and she’s wearing Elsie’s engagement ring too. But in true soap fashion, the wedding doesn’t go as planned. First, we find ourselves in Websters’ Garage where Rick the drug dealer is threatening Tommy Duckworth with all kinds of nastiness if he doesn’t take a car full of drugs to Amsterdam. As Tommy works in the garage stuffing cars with drugs, Tina’s in her bridesmaid’s dress, locks Tommy in the office and drives off to the canal with the drugs. She rings Rick and tells him that if he wants the booty back, he’ll have to meet her down at the canal. “You drop that bag into the water,” Rick snarls at Tina, “and I’ll drop this one in too!” The bag he refers to is Rita in her wedding dress, who he’s kidnapped from the Street just as she’s about to be wed. Tina surrenders the drugs and then the cops arrive and nick Rick.
At the Registery Office, Dennis is anxious that Rita’s not just fashionably late for her own wedding, she’s uncomfortably and horribly well behind time. Then a cop car screams up the drive with Rita inside, a little shaken and stirred but looking wonderful still.
And so Norris takes Rita by the arm and waltzes her up the aisle to the tune of “On the Street Where You Live.” It’s a very touching scene as Rita and Dennis, both of whom it’s far to say have been around the block a fair few times, exchange their vows. “I don’t offer you the summer of my lifetime,” Rita tells Dennis as they exchange rings. “I offer you the autumn, all warm and mellow.”
Elsewhere this month, it’s Kirsty’s 30th birthday and she doesn’t take the milestone well. Especially when she finds out that Tyrone’s organised a surprise party for her. It’s a surprise that gives Kirsty shock when she discovers Tyrone’s invited her parents – and they’ve turned up! Kirsty’s shock at seeing her folks turns to fury and after everyone leaves the party, she slams Tyrone up against the living room wall, leaving poor Tyrone battered and bruised and more than a little confused.
Karl and Sunita’s affair sleazes its way along and they enjoy sub-duvet shenanigans in the flat above the shop just as Dev walks in showing Kevin around as he’s looking for a new place to live with baby Jack. Sunita jumps out of bed and pretends to be cleaning as Karl hides in his pants in the wardrobe.
Over at the salon, Maria gets chatted up by a fella who wants his hair done but when he asks her out on a date, it all goes quite wrong. Marcus then starts paying more attention to Maria’s love life than Sean would really like, causing a little bit of friction between the two men. Could Marcus be turning straight?
At Weatherfield Court, Leanne and Peter start their custody battle for little Simon, which turns into a slanging match as tensions run high. The judge says she wants more reports done and the case is adjourned for a few weeks. Ken tries and fails as peace maker between his warring son and Leanne while little Simon acts out his frustrations and ends up in hospital after getting drunk on a bottle of wine.
And in other news this month, Carla sacks Eileen from the factory after she takes time off to attend Lesley’s funeral. The workers walk out in support of Eileen and Ida Clough would have been proud. Eileen’s touched by her friends’ concern but bemused as she tells them there really was no need – she’s got her job back on the Streetcars Switch.
