Let’s start out
this month with bad decisions...
Case in point: The Millers. If they didn’t make
bad decisions, they wouldn’t make any decisions at all. There is
hapless Mickey, who has been gainfully employed for all of about
five minutes in all his time in Albert Square; There’s Darren, who
has now learned to use his brains and natural business savvy for
good, though cannot seem to understand the value of attending
school... and there’s Dawn. Oy. Don’t ask. Her main talent?
Choosing the wrong men. The latest: ex-con Jase, who is trying to
go straight (sort-of), has moved into the Miller house, and
started a little home renovation business. His new client is
keeping him away from home a bit too much, and Dawn worries that
he’s cheating, so to calm her he proposes, and she says ‘yes’...
And then there’s Keith, who makes Mickey look
industrious. He refuses to work (on principal, of course). His
time better spent watching TV and scrounging for free drinks in
the Vic. This month, his ship finally comes in, and finds him
waiting at the airport. He’s hit the lottery! And in true Albert
Square fashion, the family giddily goes out to the Vic to
celebrate, before they cash in the ticket. And wouldn’t you know
it; Keith had a hole in his pocket, and the ticket is gone, and
for his kids, this is the final straw. They toss him out of the
house. He spends a few days sleeping rough, on Arthur’s bench,
until the Masoods take him in. Sort of. And once his butt is
firmly planted on their couch, they cannot get rid of him, and his
family still refuses to speak to him...
Elsewhere...Lucy and Ian continue to play a game
of chicken with each others nerves...Denise returns from her round
the world trip to find daughter Chelsea in a downward spiral. Her
reaction is to berate her which, even though Chelsea is annoying,
doesn’t seem to be the right response considering she’s been MIA
for months. Chelsea grows closer to her newly discovered Dad, much
to Denise’s dismay...
But back to the Millers, specifically Dawn, who
has bigger problems: Unbeknownst to her, the woman that Jase has
been getting all this work from is none other than Mad May – the
Doctor who tried to kill Dawn to get her baby. Somehow, she’s out
of the loony bin, and is back for round two. She keeps asking the
clueless Jase about his family. By the time the Millers get wise,
it’s too late. She turns up the Miller house, knocks Mickey
unconscious and chases Dawn to an upstairs bedroom. After much
sturm and drang, unable to get the baby, May goes down to the
kitchen, turns on the gas, then lights a fag. The result? Quite
loud. The Miller house explodes into a ball of fire with Mickey,
Dawn and baby Summer trapped on the second floor. Of course, this
is where it turns to farse as the panic-stricken Walfordians try
to rescue them from a window that is only about 10 feet off the
ground. (Why didn’t someone just go across to the Vic and get a
barstool? Must I think of everything?) In any event, all Millers
are saved, by Keith, who runs into the fire to pull Dawn out, and
May is killed (though, since we don’t actually see the body, who
knows?)...Hmmm...
But here’s how NEW YORK FANS can make a great
decision: On November 20, 7pm, WLIW/Channel 21 will be
sponsoring a fabulous LIVE event that is a must see for any
EastEnders fan: A screening of Dot’s Story, the
stand-alone EastEnders special never broadcast in the US.
In this movie, we learn all about the early life of one of the
most beloved characters of all time: Dot Cotton Branning! We have
often heard her speak glowingly of being evacuated during the war,
and living with “Auntie Gwen”, well in this film, told partially
in flashback, we see what this time was really like, and see how
Dot became the person she is. We even get to see Dot’s Mum (who is
NOTHING like you would expect!)
Dot’s Story will be privately screened at a
theatre here in Manhattan, on a BIG movie screen, and will benefit
keeping Eastenders on the air on PBS station WLIW.
Cost of a ticket is $100 for one, or $180 for two tickets. Tickets
are limited, so hurry to get yours! (They’re more than halfway to
sold out already!) You can get your ticket by calling:
1-800-767-2121, or go on-line at: www.wliw.org. If you have
never seen EastEnders on a Big Screen, with a room full of
fans, you MUST! It is an experience not to be missed! I hope to
see you there on November 20!!!
