UK-US Tax Information

To The Budget – And Beyond! TODAY – as I write – was UK Budget Day! As a total non-event, this must be a winner. Even more so when it’s occurring a few weeks before an election, so the overall requirement must be – don’t upset anyone! As expected the provision I mentioned last month […]

Fifty Shades Of FATCA (admit it, that got you interested!) OVER THE past few months, many clients have sent me copies of the letters they’ve received from UK high street banks asking for information from which the banks will decide whether or not their customer is a “US person”. Obviously most of my readers are […]

The New, Longer Arms Of The HMRC! IT USED to be true (with a few exceptions) that having left the UK, your income and gains would not be subject to UK tax. One exception was rental income from UK property; the UK had the first right to tax this income because it went with where […]

Happy New Year – Maybe From You To The IRS? OVER THE past few months, I’ve written a lot (and often) on the requirement to declare UK income on your US tax return, possibly with the result of paying US tax and generally with the need to make sure you aren’t paying UK tax on […]

How Mistakes Get Made (And How To Avoid Them!) AMERICANS are a funny lot! No, it hasn’t taken me fourteen years to work this one out! One of the things that still amazes me is how the US authorities don’t see (or don’t care) how negative a word “alien” is, when used to describe anyone […]

Tax Authorities Are Not There To Advise You! WOULD YOU expect the UK tax authority to give you tax information that may help you pay less tax? In an ideal world they might do so, but we certainly haven’t got there yet! I’m particularly referring to the fact that, as US residents, it is unlikely […]

One Will Good, Two Wills Even Better! OVER THE past few months, I’ve noticed more people are asking me about their Wills and, in particular, what arrangements they should make regarding assets remaining in the UK. I hope this is a sign of good planning skills on the part of UK expatriates, rather than an […]

Another Opportunity – But The IRS Sets The Terms! MY REGULAR readers (and there are one or two, and none of them is my mother!) will know I’ve written previously about the programs the IRS has run to “encourage” taxpayers to declare foreign income on their tax returns and file Foreign Bank Account Reports (FBARs). […]

Don’t Believe Everything You Read! IF I WAS to tell you there is a lot of alarmist rubbish spoken about FATCA, would you be surprised? I’ve had a number of calls recently from people who are very worried about what they’ve read about potential penalties and so I’ve decided to write this article as the […]

Son Of The Foreign Bank Account Report! IT’S JUNE (already!) and in the international tax world, our thoughts turn to – the Foreign Bank Account Report! Not the old Foreign Bank Account Report, known to his friends (and others) as TDF 60-92.1, but the new form known as FINCEN 114. Except it’s not a form […]
